President Joseph R. Biden has appointed Teagle Foundation Director Alondra Nelson to the position of Deputy Director for Science and Society in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Nelson is Professor and Harold F. Linder Chair in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and President of the Social Science Research Council. She has studied the societal impacts of emerging technology as well as racism in science and medicine. Her widely acclaimed books include The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome (2016) and Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination (2011).
