New York, N.Y. - The Teagle Foundation has appointed as its new Vice President for Programs a scholar of literature who currently serves as the Director of Fellowship Programs at the American Council of Learned Societies. At the ACLS her primary responsibility has been the leadership of its major fellowship programs, including one of the largest in the humanities and social sciences. Donna Heiland will join the New York foundation on September 1 with special responsibility for the Foundations grant making in higher education.

Her work has appeared in publications including Modern Philology, Eighteenth-Century Life, Recherches Sémiotiques/Semiotic Inquiry and New Light on Boswell, a collection of critical essays from Cambridge University Press. Her most recent academic research focuses on the development of gothic literature in the eighteenth-century onward. Blackwell Publishing just released her book Gothic and Gender: An Introduction in the United Kingdom, and US publication will follow in August.
"Donna Heiland's decision to join The Teagle Foundation brings us energy, imagination and, above all, a deep commitment to liberal education," commented the Foundation's president, Bob Connor. "Her work will not just be restricted to grant making but will reach into every aspect of our strategic planning efforts. Her knowledge and expertise will be a source of strength in aiding the Foundation go forth with its mission to strengthen rigorous and imaginative liberal arts education."
The Teagle Foundation, a private foundation, was established in 1944 by Walter C. Teagle (1878-1962), longtime president and later chairman of the board of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), which is now Exxon Mobil Corporation. The Teagle Foundation is currently working to mobilize resources, financial and intellectual, our own and those of potential partners, to help students "catch fire" intellectually through a challenging, wide ranging and enriching college education.
