TEAGLE FOUNDATION ELECTS NEW BOARD MEMBER
New York, NY (September 17, 2007) - The Teagle Foundation announced today the election of Richard J. Light as a member of their Board of Directors.
"We're thrilled to welcome Dick Light to Teagle's Board of Directors," said W. Robert Connor, President of the Teagle Foundation. "He is a leader in higher education, imaginative, innovative, and utterly dedicated to helping students have the richest, the most engaged, the most challenging and rewarding college experiences possible. His experience and expertise, in the qualitative assessment of student learning and much more, will benefit the Foundation enormously."
Dr. Light teaches statistics, program evaluation, and policy analysis with a focus on higher education at Harvard. He created and now chairs Harvard's Seminar on Assessment, a consortium of faculty and administrators from twenty-four colleges and universities that carries out research on college effectiveness, now in its eighteenth year. Dr. Light is also Founder and Chair of the Forum for Excellence and Innovation in Higher Education. This forum, funded by the Spencer Foundation, aims to systematically evaluate and improve students' experience on campus, allowing each institution to become a "learning organization." Dr. Light received a Ph.D. in statistics from Harvard in 1969 and was appointed as a professor there in 1974.
Dr. Light is an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been a leading figure among important efforts for assessment and evaluation of learning with organizations such as the American Evaluation Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. General Accounting Office, and the National Academy of Education. Dr. Light was elected a Trustee of Wellesley College in 1999, and has been elected to the National Board of the American Association for Higher Education, and appointed to the National Board of the Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education. Dr. Light has authored or co-authored seven books, and his most recent book, "Making the Most of College: Students Speak their Minds," was honored the Virginia and Warren Stone Prize for best book of the year about Education and Society.
