This book chapter by Richard Gilman, Nancy Hensel, and David Salomon outlines an approach to the faculty reward system that recognizes the totality of faculty work encompassing teaching, advising, research, and service while managing faculty workload in a manner that better supports student learning. It results from New American Colleges and Universities’ study of changes in faculty work due to technology, new student-centered pedagogies, and increased expectations for faculty involvement in community service. The chapter appeared in Envisioning the Faculty for the 21st Century: Moving to a Mission-Oriented and Learned-Centered Model (Rutgers University Press, 2016) edited by Adrianna Kezar and Daniel Maxey.
