Grant Summary
$300,000 over 36 months to implement a major transformation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences’ (HSS) four-semester core curriculum, centering humanistic learning as an essential element of preprofessional education. The newly designed HSS core, known as “The Union,” will involve a shared syllabus that will allow at least two-thirds of the incoming class to participate in a common intellectual experience as part of the first semester gateway course; formalize common transformative texts across sections of its required courses for the second and third semesters; and reconfigure the fourth semester course as a research writing workshop that will ask students to complete an extended project that applies humanistic learning to issues relevant in their preprofessional education in engineering, art, and architecture.
